Profriends: Creating a Greener Home

The recent Typhoon Maring and habagat (monsoon)  inspired me to write about promoting greener living. Our Lancaster home (project of PROFRIENDS) survived the storm; thankfully! It did flood on some parts of the village (ankle-deep only) so it meant that Maring was a real B (dog mother)! But in the end, who else do we have to blame but ourselves? We should always be prepared for such calamities and try to prevent those by doing our part.
Our primary residence after all is the Earth. We can’t just move to another planet to rent or buy after we get tired of it or after the living condition has become barely bearable. Trying to make a difference, no matter how big or small, can make a huge impact. So here are some tips on how to create a more environment-friendly home (I already started doing some of these):

Observe the three Rs – Reduce. Re-use. Recycle. It’s an age-old teaching that may be sound so overrated but is not. Try to google the yearly tons of garbage in the country. It’s a scary number. Reducing is very beneficial since it helps save on money and living space. Re-using and recycling also helps save money. Plus, there are so many fun DIYs out there.

Invest in alternative power – Cutting down on water and electricity really helps. Plus, it saves you money again! Yay! Investing in solar panels can be helpful. Consider it as a nice investment. Plus, you get to have electricity even during brownouts or blackouts.

Purchase organic – Organic food, beauty products, and such are beneficial for your health and for the environment. Always opt for organic because when you do, others might consider following in your footsteps.

Save! – Save on everything. Apart from water and electricity, save on food, cleaning products, toiletries and so on. The world’s resources are becoming lesser by the minute. Due to overpopulation, resources are depleting in order to supply demand. If you want to save on electricity, replacing bulbs with LED bulbs greatly helps as well. Purchasing power-saving gadgets and appliances are always better.

Paint your thumb green – Not so keen on planting? Me, too, but I would like to consider thinking about the environment first than my personal interests so I asked my mom to teach me about plants and taking care of them. My mom has a green thumb and I decided I would help her with planting.
Raise green-thumbed children – After I learn so much from my mom, I could pass down my knowledge to the next generation. I’m not sure if I’ll have children in the future but I could pass it down to my future nieces and nephews or godchildren.

It’s never too late. We should all take action now. It’s not only for our sake but also for the sake of future generations to come. Cheesey, I know! But I just got to thinking, you know…

Got some helpful tips to share? I’d love to hear it! Just comment below!
