PROFRIENDS: Securing the Home

We can never really say when danger will come. As much as we want to stay away from it, there are times when it draws near. Yes, it is scary so one way to avoid it is through taking precautions. One example is the home. Some are lucky enough not to encounter intruders but in our country, there are plenty of incidents of trespassing, robbery, and murders. Best secure your home in order for you and your family to be safe.

  • Lock and roll – Make sure all doors, windows and other forms of entry can be securely locked. Track everyone who has the duplicate keys to these doors and locks.
  • As much as possible, avoid having nooks and crannies right outside your home. Burglars can easily conceal themselves in such places. If you have them, make sure they are well-lit at night. Invest in LED light bulbs to save on electricity because a dark house can be a criminal’s haven.
  • Don’t place money, gadgets and other valuables near the window. Make sure they can’t be easily spotted from the outside because a robber will surely try to go on a treasure hunt in your home when he/she gets the chance. Robbers study a neighborhood and take note of everyone’s schedule. (Personally, this happened to me. My netbook was swooped away through the window. Then, my brother used to sleep in the living room with his laptop by his side. When it was my turn to sleep in the living room, I saw a man looking through our window. I was pretending to be asleep because I wanted to be sure someone was there; that is was not my imagination. When I saw the shadow man, I was scared and quickly turned on the lights. He ran away.)
  • Hide valuables in hard-to-reach places or unimaginable places so that burglars would really have a hard time finding your stuff. The more time they take the more chances they’re going to get caught or get scared and flee without getting anything.
  • Be friends with your neighbor. When they become familiar with your family, relatives, and friends, they would be able to determine who your acquaintances are and who strangers are.
  • If possible, try to get a dog. The smaller ones are noisier than bigger ones. If you really want to catch a thief, conceal your dog so that they will be caught off-guard and you can make your big catch. (Be sure to take care of your pet! Don’t merely use it as a burglar alarm. Pet-lover here!)

We live at Lancaster (project of Property of Friends Inc. or Profriends). Although they continue to promote that the estate is secure, it’s still best to take personal precautionary measures. As much as I wouldn’t want to consider this but what if a neighbor or fellow resident tries to intrude as well? Anyway, be alert; be prepared, and be safe!
